Inspired by an invisible, yet powerful overlap in their family history, Clory Jackson and Caroline Hann have embarked on a creative journey to explore and to confront the history of Brownsville, a community of freed black people once nested in Frostburg, MD, and its social impact on the lives of Brownsville descendants and Western Maryland residents.
Brownsville began in 1866 when Tamer Brown and later Elizabeth Jackson
purchased land from Nelson and Caroline Beall. Brown and Jackson were
both formerly enslaved black women. Other formerly enslaved people
from Allegany County purchased land and built homes creating the
Brownsville community, which thrived from the 1860ís to the 1950ís.
